Lombardini group: Personalized solutions for road compaction

The Lombardini Group of Reggio Emilia is coming to BAUMA 2007 to demonstrate all the qualities its engines offer to companies involved in the construction business.

The Italian group (European leader in the production of diesel and petrol engines up to 50 kW) is presenting a complete range of diesel engines, air- and water-cooled, destined, in particular, for the main road compaction applications (such as vibrating plates, mini dumpers, small compaction rollers and trenchers). In addition to the 15 LD range of single-cylinder engines, which now includes the new models of "silenced" engines, 15 LD 225S, 15 LD 350S and 15 LD 440S, the models of the FOCS Plus (LDW 702, LDW 1003, LDW 1204) and CHD (LDW 1603, LDW 2204, LDW 2204T) ranges will also be presented.

In the development of solutions designed for the building industry, the Lombardini Group has concentrated on demand coming from the market, above all in terms of noise abatement and fuel consumption. The Italian Group, in fact, has always developed personalized solutions capable of responding at best to the user's specific requirements. The company's approach gives maximum attention to respect for the environment, as it pursues a strategy of development compatible with health and environmental protection. Designing ever "cleaner" engines (preferred by users) is an element of strong competitiveness in the market. Protection of the environment is a primary responsibility of a manufacturer of engines such as the Lombardini Group and the concept has become a focal point of the group's strategy. All "Made in Lombardini" engines guarantee very low consumption of both fuel and lubricating oil in any working conditions, even the toughest.

As regards noise abatement, the company has concentrated on the development of combustion and injection systems inside the engine, so as to avoid resorting to the adoption of any additional components. Lowering noise levels, in particular in the compaction sector, is a very important factor, in view also of current legislation (in particular, Directive 2000/14/EC on noise emissions). Thanks to the work done by Lombardini on combustion and fuel injection, quieter machines can be produced without having to compromise in terms of performance and fuel consumption. Given that there is no need for additional cowling to reduce noise, the engines remain identical as far as the structure and dimensions are concerned, also making maintenance and eventual replacement easier.

The Lombardini Group has developed a range of engines particularly suitable for companies working in the sector of road compaction. The 15LD range of single-cylinder direct-injection (air-cooled) diesel engines are an excellent choice for vibrating plates, as they guarantee the power outputs required by users economically and with low maintenance needs. This type of engine, which includes the models 15 LD 225, 15 LD 315, 15 LD 350, 15 LD 400, 15 LD 440 and 15 LD 500, offers a range of outputs from 3 to 7,9 kW (3000 rpm), is an ideal solution for compacting ramps and trenches, compacting foundations for buildings and preparing road surfaces. As well as the standard features, all 15LD engines can be fitted with a large number of accessories such as ptos, air filters, electrical ignition, remote accelerator and stop controls, single lever controls, high-capacity oil sump, etc. One of the most useful accessories for the construction industry is the hour meter (especially for the hire sector), while the protection of the starter motor and the air filter blockage sensor can protect engines in particularly dusty environments like building sites.

Particularly suited to application on vibrating plates are the new silenced engines in the range, the Lombardini Group models 15 LD 225S (capacity: 224 cubic centimetres), 15 LD 350S (capacity: 349 cubic centimetres) and 15 LD 440S (capacity: 442 cubic centimetres), designed to comply with noise abatement standards, a need keenly felt on building sites. Concentrating on the development of combustion and injection systems inside the engine has made it possible to combine noise abatement (from 3 to 4 decibels on an uncowled generator) with the simplest possible application, without any additional components. The Lombardini Group is pursuing a further expansion of its range of silenced engines, with a view to providing solutions that meet the needs of the market. For vibrating plates needing higher performance, the Lombardini Group can supply a two-cylinder diesel engine of the 12LD family, such as the 12 LD 477/2 model, which provides more power (14.7 kW) maintaining the same advantages in terms of simplicity and reliability.

Another ideal application of "Made in Lombardini" engines in the compaction sector is on dumper and mini dumpers, products which need to use engines with limited power but capable of guaranteeing the load capacities required on site. Great simplicity of use and maintenance and a low noise output of the machine are increasingly felt to be necessary. The 15 LD 400 and 15 LD 440 models developed by Lombardini achieve a power output of 6.4 kW (3000 rpm) enabling a load capacity of 700 kilograms. If higher performance is necessary, the FOCS Plus indirect-injection (water-cooled) diesel engines are available. The LDW 702 two-cylinder model, very compact and quiet, enables a load capacity of 1,000 kilograms to be achieved thanks to a power output of 11.6 kW (3000 rpm).

The Lombardini Group manufactures engines capable of adapting perfectly also to special applications such as trench rollers (vibro-compaction rollers) which are used mainly to compact soil in trenches. The LDW 1003 (3-cylinder) model of the FOCS Plus range offers a power output of 19.5 kW (3600 rpm) to achieve a compaction force of 75 kN, while at the same time working very quietly. All Lombardini engines are ideal solutions both for the final user and for hire companies, as they guarantee a long useful life of the machine with after-sales service provided by more than 2,000 points around the world.
